TRIBUTE: Something that indicates the worth, virtue or effectiveNESS of the one in question
(As defined by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)
Bill Lowe first came to Camp Barnabas in the summer of 2006, and his time here has had a domino effect. His volunteer experience led growing numbers of his immediate family, friends and members of his church to share in this ministry.
Barry Whitmire, Bill's brother-in-law, was planning to volunteer this coming summer; however, Barry died unexpectedly on October 4, 2009.
According to Bill, "Barry was a child of God and loved being involved in ministry opportunities, one of which involved special children at his church.
"God put on my family's heart a way to honor and remember Barry through establishing a scholarship fund in his name: to help pay for kids to come to camp that might not otherwise have any opportunity to do so. By way of establishing this fund, Barry can still be a part of Camp Barnabas through the children that will be able to enjoy camp next summer."
To kick off this fundraising effort, Bill and his wife, Lisa, will be running in the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis and are accepting donations in Barry's memory in conjunction with this event. Their fundraising efforts will continue after the race and they hope to have the fund well-established by the time they cross the finish line at the Country Music Marathon in April at Nashville.
Camp Barnabas is encouraged by this family's choice to pay tribute to a well-lived life that continues to affect and change the world.
